Painter of Historic Native American Cultures

Meet fine artist James Ayers, a 1991 graduate of Rhode Island School of Design.

In January, I was introduced to him at the 26th Annual Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale, Arizona. If you are in the area, it goes until March 27th.

We were meandering through the exhibited art in the huge white tents and his booth was a standout!

We stopped to chat.

When asked how long a painting this size would take to complete he said “about a week.”  Hours and hours.

He photographs his models and pays great attention to authentic details. It was fascinating to watch him paint the hand on Spirit of the Wise Man- Shoshone Painting.

(Click the title of the painting or his name above to see more of his work.)

I know my photographing him while he painted  was a distraction but he said it was okay.  Thank you James.

I bought these when we lived in Germany

Decorative plates. Villeroy and Boch Naïf pattern

The order of the seasons is what I notice, how I put them up- perhaps in order of preference?

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter

Next I’ll be in the basement digging around for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons album I think is down there. Jen H has inspired us to post our seasons.

Dance Dance Dance
The Dancers. All those ballerinas. I had a framed print on my childhood wall.
I’m visiting my sister but Wednesday we’re headed to family in Ohio.
On Monday at MOMA, I read signs of the Edgar Degas exhibit which previews the day we leave the city-glimpses of what I’d miss were represented in the gift shop.

Degas dancers on bookmarks, stationery, prints to be framed, journals, magnets, a children’s book. Not a mug in sight!

The entrance to the exhibit, cordoned off until tomorrow for members.

Ellie Valentine* is one of the nicest people I know, so when she invited me to attend this event I said if I’m in town, I’d go –#Creativesprint what it’s all about.  Check out the link and anyone can sign up. Free.

She thinks I’m perfect for this 30 day challenge. That it will be easy for me.

Hope so. (The last challenge I signed up in the new year,  I abandoned the effort early on, uh-oh)

Voodoo Brewery is located in the old firehouse in Homestead on Ninth Avenue

I had Pierogies and onions on greens, hummus and pita and veggies. A bold brown ale. They are into Brewology at Voodoo.

From #Creativesprint

“Whenever you embark on a new journey, it is important to remember that it is the individual steps that get you to your destination. This is why we always start a CreativeSprint the same way.

Day 1

Make something that fits in the palm of your hand, using only materials from your immediate environment.”

Immediate environment? I did not have to leave my bed this morning to make Rudolph the Red Nosed Rodent. The jiggly eyes leftovers from the art room, in a clear ziploc.

Would you believe I had a plastic egg of erasure compound that cleans mats, right on my night table?  (like gummy art erasers)

A ball head pin from my zippered knitting notions case for the nose, a pen made the Swiss  cheese  wedge.

Photographed, tagged, shared. So this is what the #creativesprint challenge is about.

I bet there are lots of mice in the palms of hands but none with a red nose.

Meet Malka- A Stitch in Dye

Austin, Texas is noted for live music and creative artists.

And stunning hand-dyed, uniquely-patterned fabrics, by Malka Dubrawsky. Touring her studio, I was reminded of my color theory class, studying Josef Albers.

In between wedding and celebrations, Colleen, who hails from Nova Scotia, made arrangements to meet Malka at her studio, A Stitch in Dye.

Colleen is an avid quilter and follows Malka’s blog.

The four of us piled in Joanne’s car and her son Chris, ferried us to A Stitch in Dye where Malka welcomed us and generously gave a tour of her studio.

Acquiring Art from Art All Night

$

To say Art All Night in Lawrenceville is a happening, would be an understatement.  Over a thousand pieces of art are hung and displayed for 24 hours.

No jury, any medium- just ONE piece per artist. No exceptions.

It takes a ton of volunteers to organize, create and support this community event.   Check all the art in, check all the art out.  Make sure the artists get back their artwork.

There’s lots of music, comedy, yoga, mosaic making, live art, children’s activities and T-shirts for sale to wear until next year which will be the twentieth year.

Here’s the great part- thousands of people attend the show.  This year Steve and I went on the peaceful Sunday morning instead of the wild and crazy and heavily populated Saturday night.  An artist friend had taken in my Mill at Night photograph along with his painting. He’d encouraged me to participate again this year.

When I saw the piece below on one of the panels, it spoke to me.  I got the contact information off the tag and called the artist right away.   This afternoon we met at the bookstore in the Waterfront and check out how she packaged her art.

Thanks Jill.  I am thrilled to have your “Corona” in my home.

IMG_3903We exchanged email and contact information and hope to knit together sometime soon.

A gallery from Art All Night so you can get the feel for the event.   Remember my visit was early Sunday morning so it was sparse as far as viewers go but there were plenty of volunteers.

First Visit to Children’s Museum

Monday May 2, 2016.

Charles, Laura and I went to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.

When you’re ten months old there are so many “firsts” to experience.

I am so glad I bought a family membership last summer when Mark and Erika’s children came to visit.

Today the waterplay at the end of our visit was his favorite but I didn’t get any photos of his splashing. So much more to explore next visit!

One of our favorite parts was the helpful woman in the Museum Gift Shop.

We found a little “first car” and a baby beaver Folkmanis puppet for Charles’ first birthday coming in June. (shhhhh, it’s a surprise!)

My artist friend Joan paints Pennsylvania Wildflowers on her beehives.  I learned there are different parts to a beehive. (see article link below)

Her bees were busy and didn’t want to be disturbed but Joan assured me she keeps an EpiPen in case I was allergic.

From the April wedding in Austin, Texas.

David Lujan co-owner(with his wife) & curator of Black Lagoon: art+ yoga and artist.  He tended the bar at the wedding celebration and made the little fairy chairs out of the champagne tops. He was sketching a tree house for his daughter, as I remember.  I must carry a reporter’s notebook to write down the details.

My friend Roberta called me today. What a great find for the blog! She told me about the cool competition happening in front of the main Carnegie Library.  Pittsburgh themed and sand sculptures being created by five international teams of two, right under a big tent in Oakland.

The competition is over Friday afternoon at three-“Trowels Down”

200 tons of sand from a quarry was delivered to the walkway in front of the museum, then moved by a front loader.

Each team received 40 tons of sand to sculpt.

I was in Millvale Friday afternoon.  The Pittsburgh Society of Artists Show is up and the opening is 6PM Saturday night.  They were asking members who are photographers to volunteer to photograph events so I said I would. Thought I’d check it out when it was empty first.  A sneak peek below. More to come.

Tomorrow night the gallery will be filled with people!

And a nod to Jackson Pollock at the car wash. Abstract expressionism for sure. I’ve photographed some impressionism at the car wash before today.

I was on my way to Columbus Ohio, stopped for gas at the Sheetz in Triadelphia West Virginia. Do you want a car wash? Y or N?   I thought, why not?  Hit Y.

A code is printed on the receipt and you go get in line across the lot.

Not sure what’s in their soap but the car looked nice and clean once it rinsed off.

A little break in the monotonous drive on the interstate.

Oh, then there was the potato chip art, from the bag I’d purchased when I went to the rest room. Lunch.

A Starfish right in the middle of the giant ruffled chip.

The city of Pittsburgh’s Mt. Washington (elevation 6,289) just before sunset, Monday evening.

Inspired by the Weekly Photo Challenge

and a big nod to  Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen sculpture Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the sculpture garden- Walker Art Center   The spoon weighs 5,800 pounds the cherry 1,200 pounds. I saw this sculpture when we visited Matthew when he was a student at Macalester College in St. Paul. It came to mind when I was thinking about photographing a cherry on top for the weekly photo challenge.
