Meditation Lights Created With Dual Image Photographs

When I went to pick up my order at my favorite framer, Panza Gallery in Millvale, I saw these lights aglow.

They are “lights not lamps, Mark Panza said.  “You can leave them on all the time and they don’t get hot.”

They caught my eye and I asked Mark about them.  Turns out he makes them and not to share his trade secrets but he uses his signature combined dual images containing architecture, figures, and or nature.  He constructs the base from frame scraps, builds a glass or plexiglass box, adds an LED light  and then Mark lines the box with his image.  Each one is unique.

IMG_6496

In some of the pieces you can see recognizable architectural details from the William Penn Hotel downtown Pittsburgh and Sacred Heart Church Rose Window in Shadyside.

IMG_6497
They looked even better when Mark switched off the gallery lights.  There was still a lot of daylight from the door but they really glowed.

You may have seen previous posts with Panza Gallery featured.

Mark (and his lovely daughter Jennifer) always do a great job framing my photographs and artwork.

Panza Gallery is “dedicated to the Pittsburgh artist”.

Millvale, PA has a lot happening.

This afternoon my son Mark sent a few photos of the Zeigler House in Frankfort Kentucky.

Individual or group tours can be arranged with the homeowners (by appointment) and if you click the link above you can hear interviews of the owners telling what it is like to live there.

It is the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in Kentucky.

Here are the photos,  thanks Mark.

Tonight I attended the Congressional Art Awards hosted by Congressman Mike Doyle at the William Pitt Student Union, University of Pittsburgh.

One of my students had an artwork in the exhibit.   Because it’s a photograph showing herself I am unable to post her piece but I am very proud of her for participating.

On the way out of the Assembly Room,  I photographed the beautiful (and very large) neon art installation by artist Jane Haskell.       (See plaque below)

You can see the Cathedral of Learning and the Pitt Panther mascot.  IMG_9098

Completing the gradebook, returning materials, getting signatures that I’ve accomplished the required tasks.

My remaining time at school growing shorter by the minute.

Still things to be done, so why not take a break and create something?
I glued all the “students” in the lid of a copy paper box.   Well, not all of them but as many of the seniors who graduated last Sunday.

What might look like leftover stuff to others became a wonderful memory to me.

Thanks for the memories.

Gallerie Chiz in Shadyside, Art Show Opening

susan and joan

Artists Susan Middleman and Joan Brindle. Classmates reunited at Susan’s Opening Reception Friday night.

Class of 1965-  they met as freshmen at Carnegie Tech

(now Carnegie Mellon University) Pittsburgh PA

Joan and I were art teachers in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and then Joan was my Art Supervisor. We became friends. That’s how I got invited to her friend Susan’s Art Opening Reception at Gallerie Chiz. The large oil paintings on paper are Susan’s art work.

I met the artist Susan Middleman through Joan.

IMG_2991Hosted by Gallerie Chiz owner/director Ellen Chisdes Neuberg who provided the space for connections. I knew she was the gallery owner as she came to introduce herself. I was inquiring if her plate held a sweet or a savory.

I thought it might be a chocolate or a meatball but it was a baby bella mushroom.

Ellen sported a cool purple outfit, unique art jewelry and turquoise glasses. Plus she wasn’t carrying a purse.  Ellen and one other person would have been selected “best dressed” if I were from the paper.

Glass and found objects artist Elizabeth Fortunato showed her work at the art opening reception this evening, too. The show is open through October 10th.

My Dad Framed Postage Stamps as Art

response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Connected.”

And I did the exact same thing tonight!

I found this sheet of stamps. (a birthday gift from a friend a couple years ago)  in my desk and thought it was perfect for framing in a plastic box frame. 39 cent stamps. The children’s literature characters caught my eye.

One sheet my dad framed. These stamps came out in the early 70’s.  The love stamps are 8 cents.

And here’s another sheet of stamps my father framed. When the stamps were 13 cents.

I stitched the needlepoint pillow kit of the butterfly stamps and gave it to my Aunt Rhea and then she passed it back to me. Connections

Pittsburgh Sculpture: Joy of Life by Virgil Cantini, 1960

Saturday afternoon I drove home from a happy baby shower on the South Side.

The late autumn light on this sculpture was gorgeous.  Although I drive by this sculpture frequently, I don’t stop.

I parked, got out of the car, listened to the fountain and felt the spray as the wind was gusting.

The circle of figures holding one another in the circle seemed particularly beautiful this afternoon.  When I came home and looked it up, I was reminded of the sculpture’s title-

Joy of Life.

Spotted during Thanksgiving vacation as we were entering the Brooklyn Museum. There are similar cars in Berlin and Australia and the artist Ai Weiwei is tweeting when new locations for Lego donations are set up.

Only after I photographed it, read and researched the reason for the Lego donations for Ai Weiwei’s artworks did I realize there was a controversy.

The manufacturer of Lego in Denmark refused to supply a bulk order of lego bricks for his artwork due to the nature of his artworks’ political messages. Here is an article in The Atlantic and you can read about the controversy here

The 2015 Annual Report on the Blog came from WordPress .

Four out of five most viewed blogposts this year were NOT published in 2015.

Just one of the most viewed was posted this year.

Not sure what to think about the most popular posts viewed in 2015 date back to 2010.   Huh?

Thank you for visiting the blog and clicking the ‘like’  button and/or leaving some good words.  I appreciate your taking the time to look at the photographs.  If you’ve been with me this year, you’ve already seen these images but after reading the Annual Review of my Blogging Year from WordPress, I wanted to capture 2015 myself.  What I notice is I like weather, people, family and night photography.

I wish you a new year filled with good health and happiness.
A few of my favorites from 2015- I skipped over most of the food photos.  Will take new ones in 2016!

You Can Still Buy a Hanky

Last week in Von Maur Department Store in Columbus OH, I saw these handkerchiefs for sale.

Seeing them reminded me of the little ironed squares my mother kept in a lacquered Chinese box.

My father had larger ones, not as ornate.

Nowadays you don’t see much handkerchief use.

Delicious chocolate brownies and wine served in the back amidst vibrant artwork.

The weekly photo challenge is vibrant.

Handmade Lace and Toile du Juoy

Thursday afternoon, my friend Barbara showed me a pretty pillow she had made at Alterations Express.  She used fabric from her mother. her grandmother’s handmade lace and her special pillow.

When I saw the fabric I said,”Oh, my friend Joanne gave me a knitting bag made of something similar and it’s French and has pastoral scenes.” but I couldn’t remember the term and had to look it up-

  Toile du Jouy

(and here is a link to a blogpost about the history of toile)

IMG_5748

Barbara went and got a box with beautiful pieces of lace, created by her grandmother, Josephine Cinquegranni DiGalbo (b. 1890) Notice the blue edge on the lace.

I looked at the lace with admiration. Such expert craftsmanship and beauty. I asked Barbara is she had a photograph of her grandmother.

IMG_5774Barbara’s Grandparents, Angelo and Josephine, on their wedding day.

Her grandmother’s town of origin was Castlebuono, Sicily. The photograph was  taken on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, a Pittsburgh neighborhood.

And here is a photo of their daughter, Mary Ann, Barbara’s mother. I had the pleasure of knowing her and remember her for her kindness to my children.

IMG_5773

And here are some of the lace specimens, her grandmother’s pattern books and crochet hook were in the box, too.
